‘Gone With the Wind’ is coming back to theaters for its 80th anniversary

One of the all-time best Hollywood classics, “Gone with the Wind,” is coming back to theaters for its 80th anniversary. The film, which premiered in 1939, won eight Oscars and later received two additional honorary Oscars, making it one of the most celebrated movies of all time. When ticket prices are adjusted for inflation, it’s also ranked as the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.

The epic saga will return to the big screen for two days only on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Sunday, March 3, courtesy of Warner Bros. and Fathom Events.

The movie will play at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. both days at participating theaters nationwide. Tickets can be purchased now, either online through Fathom Events or at theater box offices where the movie will be shown. As described on the Fathom Events site, the movie’s runtime comes in at a total of a whopping four hours. But if that seems unbearably long, don’t worry. The screening will include a four-minute intermission for moviegoers to stretch their legs or run to the bathrooms.

The beloved film is based on the 1937 Margaret Mitchell novel by the same name. It stars Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland (the film’s last surviving principal cast member at age 102!) and Hattie McDaniel, who was the first black actor to ever win an Oscar.

For the uninitiated, “Gone with the Wind” takes place in Georgia during the turbulent times of the Civil War and the Reconstruction period. The film follows the life of Scarlett O’Hara, a spirited Southern belle who tries to keep her family’s plantation afloat amid a series of romantic affairs.
