Will The Original Cast Return?
In case you need a refresher, “Mamma Mia” debuted on the big screen in July 2008. The film adaptation of the Broadway hit musical featured songs from 1970s supergroup ABBA. You know: “Dancing Queen,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” and the title song “Mamma Mia.”
The story revolved around a young woman who decides to search for her father so he can attend her wedding. The story plays out in charming and amusing ways, with a long list of ABBA songs tying the whole thing together.
The original movie brought in more than $600 million back in 2008. So it seemed only a matter of time before the studio figured out a way to create a follow-up to the box office success.
It looks like most of the original cast will return for the new movie. Deadline reports Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski all signed on for the sequel.
More ABBA Music from ‘Mamma Mia’ Sequel
And yes, ABBA’s music will make a return, as well. Original ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus joined the production staff to provide music and lyrics, and serve as executive producers, according to Variety.
For the sequel, audience members can expect ABBA favorites from the original movie to take an encore. Also, there’s word that songs that didn’t make the cut the first time will make an appearance.
While a storyline has not been confirmed by producers, Ol Parker (writer of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) is writing the script and will direct the film.
