Watch This Police Department Masterfully Lip Sync ‘Uptown Funk’ on Their Lunch Break
The Norfolk Police Department in Norfolk, Virginia, had the internet buzzing last week with an epic lip sync video of the catchy Mark Ronson song “Uptown Funk,” featuring Bruno Mars.
They proudly claim the video was filmed in just one take while on their lunch break which just goes to show that the Norfolk PD has a lot more fun at lunch than the rest of us.
The video shows around 40 uniformed officers, as well as firefighters and support personnel, dancing and singing through the police department’s offices and hallways before the the grand finale that ends outside the police department. One officer is even dancing with his baby!
“I’m just so glad people are enjoying it,” Cpl. William Pickering, a Norfolk Police Department spokesman, told the Virginian-Pilot. “I’m at a loss for words.”
The video came about after a challenge from the Corinth Police Department in Corinth, Texas, who shared their lip sync video to Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the U.S.A.” earlier this month. What started as a dare from the Corinth PD has led to a viral video sensation with over 69 million views and 1.4 million shares so far.
The video has propelled the Norfolk Police Department into the national spotlight and garnered some extra attention for the group’s frontman, Officer Christopher Tavaras of special ops, who has been told he resembles Bruno Mars. In an interview with NBC, he joked that he took more photos in three days than in the last year combined.
While the Norfolk Police Department’s video has made the biggest splash (so far), police departments all over the country are challenging each other to lip sync battles. After accepting the Corinth Police Department’s challenge (and, frankly, crushing it) the Norfolk Police Department in turn challenged the nearby Virginia Beach Police Department, as well as the police departments in Seattle, St. Louis and Norfolk, England.
The Virginia Beach Police Department accepted the challenge via a video of two uniformed officers sitting on the beach and then followed it up with this teaser of an officer watching the Norfolk Police Department’s video and lip syncing just one word — “Pressure” — as the opening of David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” plays in the background.
The summer is only half over, so we can’t wait to see more lip sync videos and find out if anyone can top Officer Tavares and the Norfolk Police Department!
