A rare white moose was caught on video in Sweden

It’s certainly not everyday that you catch a moose on video—especially one that’s entirely white instead of brown. But, one lucky nature lover in Sweden was fortunate enough to get footage of a rare white moose after searching for an animal of this kind for three years.

Hans Nilsson is responsible for recording a video of the moose and causing a viral sensation. The footage has already been viewed over 2 million times.

He told a Swedish radio station that he’s been trying to track down a white moose for three years, and now he can check that off of his bucket list.

“It was a great feeling when you see such a unique animal that is not at all concerned with people,” he told a Sverige Radio. “It is a stately moose.”

Take a look at the majestic animal on the video below:

Why Is The Moose White?

According to National Geographic, the cause for the moose’s white coloring can be linked to a genetic mutation. White moose are not albino; instead, the condition is referred to as piebald, meaning the animal has a recessive gene that’s causing it to grow white fur, sometimes with specks of brown.

More White Moose Sightings

While white moose are extremely rare, this video isn’t the first of its kind to have surfaced. Back in 2016, a white moose was caught on video in Alaska, and there have been other sightings as well.

Here’s the video of the 2016 sighting in Alaska:

Göran Ericsson, a professor of elk and moose for the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, told National Geographic that he thinks the condition causing white moose is becoming more and more common.

“Hunters have chosen to not kill any moose that are light,” Ericsson told the publication, and in Canada, hunters are prohibited from killing moose that are more than 50 percent white.

So, if hunters aren’t going to be tracking down these moose (except to catch them on video), there’s a chance it could become less and less surprising to see them pop up on your social media feed.

Other Rare Animals Caught On Video

In the meantime, though, it’s interesting to get a glimpse of rare and beautiful creatures spotted around the world.

Everything from white moose to pink dolphins have been caught on camera, allowing folks from all over to see these animals in action, and therefore causing viral sensations.

What a time to be alive!
